Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin's Remarks on Issues Relating to Taiwan at the WHA Resumed Session |

At the just concluded resumed session of the 73rd WHA, the General Committee and the plenary decided respectively to refuse to include into the agenda a few countries' so-called proposal to "invite Taiwan to participate in the WHA as an observer". This fully shows that the one-China principle is unshakable and that pursuing unpopular Taiwan-related proposals is bound to fail. The Central Government of China attaches high importance to the health and well-being of our Taiwan compatriots. After COVID-19 broke out, we have given the Taiwan region the latest information updates on prevention and control multiple times and made appropriate arrangements for Taiwan's participation in global health affairs. There is an International Health Regulations Contact Point in the Taiwan region and it has unimpeded information exchange with the WHO and other countries through well-established mechanisms. Against the surging COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on international cooperation to fight the virus is the shared expectation of the vast membership of the WHO for this WHA session. The DPP authorities and a few countries, acting against the overriding trend of history and violating UNGA Resolution 2758 and WHA Resolution 25.1, insisted on pushing the Taiwan-related proposal, exposing fully the political purpose of disrupting the resumed session and undermining global anti-epidemic cooperation. We are glad to note that the vast majority of member states reiterated their firm commitment to the one-China principle and many have wrote to the WHO director-general to state this just position. The WHA has rejected for many consecutive years proposals related to Taiwan, fully demonstrating that the one-China principle is the invincible trend with sweeping international support that cannot be challenged. We urge the DPP authorities to stop engaging in political manipulation by taking advantage of the pandemic and stop humiliating itself. |
