China's Special Envoy on the Middle East Issue Wu Sike Visits Egypt

From June 20 to 22, 2009, China's special envoy on the Middle East issue Wu Sike paid a visit to Egypt. During his visit, Wu met respectively with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abu Gheit, Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa and Mohamed Abdel-Aziz Bassiouny, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Egyptian Shoura Assembly, exchanging views with them on the latest developments of the situation in the Middle East. Wu also elaborated on China's proposals on the current Middle East issue. Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Wu Chunhua, also China's full-fledged representative to the Arab League, accompanied the special envoy during the meetings.

During the meetings, Wu said this was his first visit to a Middle East country since he took office as special envoy. He hoped to convey, through the visit, the concern of the Chinese leaders, the Chinese government and its people over the Middle East issue. Under the current new circumstances, he also hoped to conduct direct discussions with all sides involved in the issue and maintain frequent communication and consultations with them. "China, together with the parties concerned and the international community, is willing to push forward the Middle East peace process," he added.

The special envoy also met the press at the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, briefing on the visit and taking questions from the journalists.

Egypt is the first stop of Wu's regional trip which will also take him to the Palestinian territories, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Russia.
