The spacious and bright Purple Palace of Beijing International Hotel was decorated anew. The photo exhibition outside the Purple Palace displayed the photos taken by world-renowned photographers. The views, scenes, styles, features, fashions, customs, of folkways of an ancient capital and a modern city were vividly displayed, representing tremendous changes, vigor, vitality and youthful spirit of Beijing. The old buildings and communities were freshly interpreted by the masters from a new perspective, making people ruminate with aftertaste. Inside the Purple Palace, the folk artists with unique skills were bringing their talents to full play. The silk people, swallow kites, silk hand drawing, paper cut, Chinese brush painting, and other non-material cultural heritages were brought alive by the adept artists. The journalists and news officers were amazed by the skills of the artists. Some of them gasped in admiration. Some started practicing by themselves and trying to learn the skills on the site. Peonies and plum blossom on the backboard shine each other and enhance each other's beauty on the stage. It was full of vigor, vitality and exuberant flavor of the spring. The screen off the stage displays the photos of the reporting activities the journalists attended in Tibet, Zhangbei and many other places.

Director General Ma Zhaoxu of the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Delivers the New Year Address

At 7:00 p.m., Ma Zhaoxu, Director General of the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delivered a warm New Year address. He said that in the extraordinary year of 2009, the People's Republic of China embraced the 60th anniversary. In the year, China worked closely with the international community to address the challenges brought about by the international financial crisis and economic recession. In the development course over the 6 past decades, China had never made achievements so significant as today, China's connection with the world had never been so close as today, and China's interest in other parts of the world had never been so strong as today. China now is at a new starting point. It is also the golden time for journalist friends to observe, understand and report China. "We are happy to see that our journalist friends have seized this golden opportunity. I'd like to thank the efforts of our journalist friends. It is through you that the world gets to know China stories, hear China voices and see the Chinese people. It is you who let more people witness the development of China in a clear and comprehensive way. With the concerted efforts of the Information Department, related ministries and commissions of the State Council and local governments in 2009, we created a better reporting environment and more convenient reporting channels for journalists. In the future, we will keep working hard to provide journalists with better and timelier services for their true, impartial and objective coverage of China. Looking into 2010, opportunities and challenges coexist. The Information Department will stay together with journalists in the boat of reform and open-up. Even if there is wind and rain on the way ahead, the boat will still be able to reach the other shore of mutual benefit and win-win result.
