Wang Yi Meets with Representatives of the Two Conflicting Parties of South Sudan

On January 6, 2014, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during his official visit to Ethiopia, met with representatives of the two conflicting parties of South Sudan in Addis Ababa.

Wang Yi said, as a Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council, China is committed to maintaining peace and stability in the region and the world. As a friend of South Sudan, China is willing to play a constructive role to bring about peace talks between the two conflicting parties of South Sudan.

Wang Yi listened to both sides briefing the current situation and talked with them respectively for reconciliation. He stressed that South Sudan is a newly-born country, and the top priority is maintaining social stability, revitalizing and developing economy. China pays high attention to the recent domestic disputes in South Sudan, and hopes that the conflicting parties will, considering the overall and long-term interests of the people in South Sudan, to immediately stop violence and agree to ceasefire, to maintain law and order, and to start peace talks as soon as possible, finding reasonable solutions.

Wang Yi said, although the two parties still hold different opinions, the difference is diminishing and the consensus is on the rise. The basic conditions for peace talks are already in place, and we hope the two parties will be able to hold formal peace talks as soon as possible, hashing out a reasonable solution. Wang Yi also encouraged both parties to seek consensus and realize reconciliation with the Chinese saying that "Brotherhood can survive the vicissitudes of life and bury hatred with a smile". The two conflicting parties of South Sudan both expressed appreciation for China's position. They said that they are willing to resolve disputes through peaceful means, hope to hold formal peace talks as soon as possible, and accept the mediation by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in East Africa. China is a big country with important influence and a true friend of South Sudan, and is welcomed to play a constructive role in making peace and promoting talks. Both sides stressed that they will take practical measures to protect Chinese institutions and the life and property of the Chinese people in South Sudan.

At present, the two conflicting parties of South Sudan are making contact with each other in Addis Ababa at the invitation of the IGAD.
