Xi Jinping Meets with Gulf Cooperation Council Delegation

On January 17, 2014, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People, with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) delegation coming to China to attend the Third Round of China-GCC Strategic Dialogue.

Xi Jinping expressed congratulations on the success of the Third Round of China-GCC Strategic Dialogue. Xi Jinping said, for 33 years since the establishment of relationship between China and the GCC, bilateral relations have enjoyed sustained and healthy development. Both sides are good brothers, good friends and good partners featuring high political mutual trust, substantial economic and trade cooperation and close cultural and people-to-people exchanges. China will, as always, develop long-term friendly relations with the GCC. The two sides should do more for planning and design, should highlight the focus of cooperation, and should enrich the contents of cooperation. The China-GCC free trade area (FTA) negotiations have lasted for 10 years, and both sides have done a great deal of basic work. The Chinese Lunar Year of the Horse is about to come, we hope that the two sides work fast to sign an agreement as soon as possible. China is willing to make joint efforts with the GCC to push forward the construction of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Maritime Silk Road of the 21st century.

Xi Jinping stressed, China pays high attention to the situation in the Middle East and Gulf region, firmly supports the efforts by the GCC countries in safeguarding their own sovereignty and regional stability, and firmly supports the GCC to play a constructive role in international and regional affairs. We are willing to strengthen communications and coordination with the GCC.

First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah of Kuwait, which holds the current rotating presidency of the GCC, conveyed the sincere greetings of the heads of GCC member states to Xi Jinping and their best wishes for the Chinese people. Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah expressed that all GCC member states attach great importance to developing relations with China, and are willing to actively promote bilateral friendly cooperation in all areas. The ancient Silk Road once linked the Gulf countries with China. The GCC member states are willing to actively participate in the construction of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Maritime Silk Road of the 21st century.
