2014-01-23 17:27

On January 23, 2014, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi in Montreux, Switzerland.

Wang Yi said that this year is a special year for China-Arab relations. It marks the 10th anniversary of the founding of China-Arab Cooperation Forum, and the 6th Ministerial Conference will be held in China, which will be very important for planning the future development of China-Arab Cooperation Forum. Going forward, the two sides need to strengthen communication and coordination to ensure the smooth conduct of the meeting and to push China-Arab relations and China-Arab Cooperation Forum to achieve greater development.

Wang Yi expressed that through unremitting efforts of all parties, the Geneva II Conference on Syria was held as scheduled. The international community has reached consensus, but there is still serious confrontations between the two sides in Syria and there are still many difficulties ahead. Yesterday, I talked with the representatives of the Syrian government and the "National Coalition", with an emphasis on promoting peace talks and a political settlement. The Arab League could play a more active and important role in this regard. China seeks no self gains in Syria. China focuses on maintaining regional peace and stability and safeguarding the fundamental interests of the majority of developing countries including Arab countries. Since the Syrian crisis, the Chinese people have provided multiple batches of humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people including the Syrian refugees outside the country. In the future, we will continue to contribute to easing the humanitarian situation in Syria.

Al-Arabi said that China is the most trust-worthy major country for the Arab states and the China-Arab Cooperation Forum is the most successful forum for foreign cooperation established by the Arab League. The Arab states are all grateful and wish to work closely with China to ensure that the 6th Ministerial Conference of the Forum achieves it expected objectives.

Al-Arabi said that although the Syria issue faces many difficulties, the peace talks should be continued and the dialogue should be continued. The international community should help ease the humanitarian situation in Syria and provide the best possible help.

The two sides also exchanged views on the Palestinian issue.
