European Council President Herman Van Rompuy Meets with Yang Jiechi

On January 27, 2014, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy met with State Councilor Yang Jiechi at the building of the Council of the European Union in Brussels.

Herman Van Rompuy expressed that Europe-China relations have entered a new stage of mature and steady development. The European side is committed to strengthening comprehensive strategic partnership with China and is ready to maintain exchanges of high-level visits with China and to deepen practical cooperation. The European side appreciates China for playing a role as a responsible major country in international affairs and is willing to strengthen cooperation with China in international and regional affairs including the Iranian nuclear issue, the Syrian issue and the Afghanistan issue.

Yang Jiechi expressed that, China-Europe comprehensive strategic partnership now enjoys a sound growth momentum. The 16th China-EU Summit at the end of last year was successful. President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang reached important consensus with EU leaders on further developing China-Europe relations. Both sides jointly issued China-EU 2020 Strategic Agenda for Cooperation. Both China and Europe support multilateralism and multipolarization. China always firmly supports the European integration as well as economic and financial stability in Europe. China fully deepening reform will bring more opportunities for China-Europe cooperation.

Yang Jiechi said, China is willing, together with the European side, to well implement the consensus between the leaders of both sides, to deepen China-Europe strategic mutual trust based on equality and mutual respect and to promote the practice of strategic vision of combining the two major forces, the two big markets and the two great civilizations of China and Europe. To push for progress of the negotiations of China-EU Investment Agreement and the launch of feasibility study for FTA.. To realize at an early date the goal of bilateral trade volume reaching 1 trillion US dollars. To strengthen communication and coordination in international and regional affairs, jointly safeguarding world peace, stability and development.
