Xi Jinping Meets with US Secretary of State John Kerry

  On February 14, 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with US Secretary of State John Kerry at the Great Hall of the People.

  John Kerry conveyed Xi Jinping the New Year greetings from President Barack Obama. He said that President Obama is looking forward to another meeting with President Xi in the near future while maintaining close contact with President Xi in the New Year.

  Xi Jinping asked Kerry to convey his greetings to President Barack Obama and the message as well that China is firmly committed to building the new model of major-country relations between China and the US and is willing to enhance dialogue with the US to strengthen mutual trust, deepen cooperation, properly handle differences and push for sustained, healthy and stable development of bilateral relations.

  Xi Jinping stressed that China and the US should maintain close high-level exchanges and strategic communication, join the efforts to ensure the success of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue, the High-level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange, the China-US Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT), and other institutional dialogues, expand cooperation in economy and trade, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, military, energy and other fields, and strengthen the dialogue, coordination and cooperation on major international and regional issues.

  John Kerry expressed that the US and China now commemorate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of US-China diplomatic relationship. For the past 35 years, China has enjoyed rapid development, and the US attaches great importance to the construction of a new model of major-country relations between the US and China. Being two major economies in the world, the US and China should strengthen practical cooperation, well manage differences, and unceasingly strengthen the driving force for the development of bilateral relations.

  On the issue of climate change, Xi Jinping stressed, China attaches great importance to the construction of ecological civilization. In this regard, it’s not that anyone askes us to do it, but we ourselves take the initiative to do it. We have taken many measures, and will continue to do so in the future. Although China and the US are at different stages of development, the two countries share convergence points of interests in green environmental, low carbon, energy conservation, emission reduction, and other aspects. Each has their own advantages. We may expect more outcomes for bilateral cooperation.

  John Kerry said that the US is willing to strengthen communications and cooperation with China and work together to push forward the global effort in coping with the climate change.

  The two sides also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula situation. Xi Jinping stated China's position on the issue.

  State Councilor Yang Jiechi was present at the meeting.
