On February 14, 2014, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Beijing.

　　Wang Yi said, President Xi Jinping and President Barack Obama held a historic meeting last year at Annenberg Estate and decided to establish a new model of major country relationship between China and the US, which charted the course for the long-term development of bilateral relations. Just now, President Xi Jinping already made important guidelines for this year's development of China-US relations during his meeting with Mr. Secretary of State of the US. The Chinese side is willing to make joint efforts with the US side and, by taking the opportunity of commemorating the 35th anniversary of the establishment of China-US diplomatic relationship, well implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, enhance dialogue and exchanges at all levels, expand practical cooperation in all fields, properly handle differences and problems, and practically put into effect the new model of major country relationship with the characteristics of non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, so as to constantly accumulate and release the positive energy of China-US relations and push forward the bilateral relations towards continuous progress on the right track.

　　Kerry stressed that the United States welcomes China's peaceful rise and has absolutely no intention to contain China. China is very important for the United States and US-China relations carry great weight for both the two countries and the world. The US side looks forward to strengthening communication and cooperation with the Chinese side in the new year to jointly push forward the construction of the new model of major country relationship between the US and China to achieve new and substantive progress.

　　The two sides as well had in-depth exchanges of views and reached wide-range agreements on this year’s high-level exchanges and dialogue mechanism and practical cooperation in various fields between the two countries.

　　Both sides agreed to continue the close communication and coordination to ensure the success of a series of bilateral and multilateral exchanges and meetings between the two heads of state this year, making it continue to lead and promote the development of China-US relations. Moreover, preparation for the new round of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue as well as people-to-people and cultural exchanges and high-level consultations should be started as soon as possible so that more positive results could be achieved.

　　The two sides agreed that the bilateral investment treaty is significant for the further development of both the respective economy and the economic and trade relations between China and the US. The two sides will work hard together for an early completion of the treaty.

　　Both sides agreed to well implement the exchange and cooperation plans of the two militaries with common efforts to actively promote the development of the bilateral military-to-military relations and to establish at an early date a mutual notification mechanism on major military actions of both sides. The US side welcomes the Chinese side to participate in RIMPAC 2014 military exercise.

　　Wang Yi pointed out that it is a common responsibility for both sides to fight against terrorism. No matter where the act of terrorism takes place, in which form it takes and what its targets are, the international community should express explicit oppositions and implement joint strikes, with no double standard. Kerry said that the US side is opposed to all acts of terrorism and is ready to strengthen anti-terrorism dialogue and cooperation with the Chinese side.

　　The two sides will try to set up a joint working team on non-proliferation to further strengthen dialogue and cooperation in the field of non-proliferation.

　　Both sides agreed to enhance policy dialogue and practical cooperation and jointly promote international negotiations on climate change.

　　Both sides agreed to enhance communication and coordination on major international and regional issues and to strengthen consultation and cooperation within the United Nations, the Group of 20 (G20), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and other multilateral frameworks.

　　Wang Yi briefed the historical background of issues regarding the East and South China Seas, stated China’s solemn position and stressed that China adheres to the path of peaceful development, pursues a good-neighborly and friendly policy and is committed to peacefully resolving related disputes through negotiation and consultation. At the meantime, nobody can shake China’s determination to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity. China hopes the US side to respect the historical facts and China’s sovereignty rights, view relevant issues in an objective and fair manner, truly refrain from taking sides, and take concrete actions to enhance mutual trust among related countries and safeguard the regional peace and stability.

　　The two sides also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula situation and other issues of common concern, and Wang Yi expounded on China’s principle positions.
