On March 19, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister John Key of New Zealand at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping said, this is our third meeting over the past one year time. It fully demonstrates how China and New Zealand highly value our bilateral relations. Your visit this time has yielded fruitful achievements. In particular, the two sides have announced the direct trading between RMB and New Zealand dollar (NZ dollar), which is a new highlight of the bilateral cooperation. We believe that your visit will surely inject new vitality into the development of China-New Zealand relations.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China-New Zealand cooperation is pioneering and exemplary. With frequent and close high-level exchanges between the two countries, both sides bear sincere aspirations to enhance understanding and cooperation, and mutual trust is increasingly deepening. Economy of New Zealand enjoys its unique advantages, while China boasts a broad market. This provides the bilateral cooperation with a considerable large space. The two sides should strengthen cooperation in agriculture and animal husbandry, expand cooperation in the fields of green economy, energy saving, emission reduction, and high technology, and promote cultural, educational and tourist exchanges. The Chinese side is willing to make joint efforts with the New Zealand side to promote China-New Zealand comprehensive cooperative relationship to a new high on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit with win-win results.

John Key said that with New Zealand-China cooperation continuingly deepening, fruitful achievements have been yielded. China has become New Zealand's biggest trading partner, top source of foreign students and the second largest source of overseas tourists. New Zealand always respects China's core interests and has strong desire to enhance bilateral cooperation. The New Zealand side welcomes investment from the Chinese side, and will guarantee the quality of food exported to China with a responsible attitude and the strictest standard. He is confident that the target of bilateral trading volume, which is set at 30 billion NZ dollars in 2020, will be achieved. The New Zealand side will support the Chinese side to successfully host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leadership Meeting in November this year.

John Key also expressed condolences on the incident of the loss of contact of the Malaysia Airlines flight to the Chinese side. Xi Jinping expressed that the Chinese government is intensifying the search and will not give up as long as there is any glimmer of hope.
