Xi Jinping Meets with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

On March 23, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the Netherlands.

Ban Ki-moon briefed the latest update of UN's mediation efforts on the Ukrainian crisis as well as his views in this regard.

Xi Jinping said that the spillover effects of the Ukrainian crisis have now been easy to see. All parties have their interests and concerns involved. The issue should be settled in a balanced manner. The Chinese side has put forward a three-point proposal, aiming that all parties involved will seek maximum common ground and not going to extremes again. Other parties involved also raised a few suggestions for settlement. At present, it's of the utmost urgency to find ideas and plans for the settlement. The Chinese side very much appreciates UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's mediation efforts, and will support the UN to play an important role in pushing for a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.

Ban Ki-moon expressed his hope for a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian issue through dialogue. He said that China is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and plays an important role in pushing forward the political settlement of the Ukrainian issue. He is willing to maintain communication with the Chinese side.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others were present at the meeting.
