2014-03-24 09:25

On March 23, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with President Park Geun-hye of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the Netherlands.

Xi Jinping said, I met with President Park Geun-hye many times last year. All the important consensus we reached are now being smoothly implemented. Both countries enjoy smooth strategic communication and enhanced political mutual trust, and have become very good partners in various fields. In a few days, both sides will hold the handover ceremony for the remains of the Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) in the ROK. We thank you, Mme. President, for pushing it in person.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and the ROK are important neighbours to each other and share the interlinked beautiful dreams and the same goals for reform. Strengthening China-ROK cooperation can better benefit the two peoples. Both sides should continue the close high-level exchanges and accelerate the negotiations on the free trade agreement between the two countries for an early agreement. The two sides should also strengthen communication and coordination on major international and regional issues to safeguard mutual interests.

Park Geun-hye said that the bilateral cooperation has gone smoothly. The ROK thanked China for the establishment of a memorial to commemorate Ahn Jung Geun, and for the ongoing construction of a memorial stone at the former barracks of the Korean Liberation Army in Xi'an. The ROK hopes to continue the frequent exchange of visits of the state leaders of both countries, to ensure the success of ROK-China strategic dialogue, the joint committee for cultural and people-to-people exchanges and other mechanisms, and conclude the bilateral free trade agreement negotiations at an early date, pushing for greater development of the bilateral relations.

Park Geun-hye extended her condolences over the incident of the loss of contact of the Malaysia Airlines flight. Xi Jinping expressed gratitude in this regard.

The two heads of state also exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula. Xi Jinping pointed out that China and the ROK share common interests and concerns on the Korean Peninsula issue. Both sides are committed to realizing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and hope to maintain peace and stability on the peninsula. The two countries both insist on a peaceful settlement of the issue, and share many integrating points for carrying out cooperation and coordination. The situation on the peninsula has basically been eased since this year and the South-North relationship has somehow improved. China speaks highly of the trust-building process of the Korean Peninsula proposed by President Park Geun-hye and hopes that the ROK and the DPRK will take a long-term perspective, keep patience and their willpower, constantly push forward the reconciliation and cooperation process to achieve independent and peaceful reunification. The Korean Peninsula nuclear issue is complicated and requires a comprehensive strategy. All relevant parties should grasp the opportunity of the time when the situation on the Korean Peninsula relatively eased, to strive for an early resumption of the Six-Party Talks.

Park Geun-hye introduced the ROK's view and proposition. She said that the ROK is grateful for China's mediation efforts for peace and talks, playing an important role in improving the relations between the ROK and the DPRK and in realizing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. The ROK is willing to maintain communication and coordination with China.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others were present at the meeting.
