Xi Jinping Attends and Addresses Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment
2015-12-19 04:00

On September 27 local time, President Xi Jinping attended and chaired the Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York. Xi Jinping delivered an important speech entitled "Promote Women's All-Round Development and Jointly Construct and Share a Wonderful World", elaborating China's propositions on advancing the global cause of women and strengthening international cooperation.

Xi Jinping pointed out that it is of great significance to hold this Meeting on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN and the 20th anniversary of the holding of the fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. Women are an important force in promoting social development and progress. Without liberation and progress of women, there would have been no liberation and progress of human. To achieve the lofty ideal of gender equality, the mankind has walked through an uneven and extraordinary course. Today, all countries are increasingly intensifying the consensus of pursuing gender equality, diversifying actions of promoting women's development, and constantly optimizing women's survival and development environment. At the same time, the development level of women in countries and regions is still out of balance, with rights, opportunities and allocation of resources between men and women still being unequal and the social recognition of women still inadequate. We should make unremitting endeavors to open up a broad way for the development of the cause of women.

Xi Jinping put forward four propositions on promoting gender equality and women's all-round development. First, promote women's development in tandem with social and economic progress. We should set up scientific and reasonable development strategies, ensure that women equally share the achievements of development, and promote women's participation in economic and social development. Second, protect women's rights and interests actively. We should systematically incorporate protecting women's rights and interests into laws and regulations, improve women's capacity for their participation in political and economic activities, ensure basic public health services for women, ensure that school is affordable and safe for every girl, and develop vocational and life-long education tailored for women. Third, strive to build a harmonious and inclusive social culture, eliminate all forms of violence against women and dismiss outdated mentalities and customs inhibiting women's development. Fourth, foster an international environment favorable for women's development. We should stand firmly for the concept of peace, development and win-win cooperation, actively safeguard peace and conduct international development cooperation in the field of women so as to narrow the development gap among women in different countries.

Xi Jinping stressed that in the process of the Chinese people's pursuit of a happy life, every woman has opportunities to excel in life and fulfill their dreams. China will be more active in implementing the basic national policy of gender equality, give play to women's important role as "half of the sky", and support women to realize their dreams and aspirations. In the coming five years, China will help the developing countries carry out 100 "Health Projects for Women and Children" and 100 "Happy Campus Projects", invite 30,000 women from the developing countries to attend training programs in China, and provide 100,000 skills training opportunities in local communities of the developing countries.

Ban Ki-moon thanked the Chinese government for holding this Meeting, which will be a milestone in the international cause of women. He hoped that governments of all countries take measures to ensure gender equality in their implementation of the post-2015 development agenda.

Representatives from nearly 100 countries attended the Meeting, including about 80 heads of state and government leaders. They exchanged views on topics of global women's development, and said that it is very important that the Chinese government and the UN jointly hold this Meeting. Gender equality is the prerequisite of social development. Since the fourth World Conference on Women in 1995, the global cause of women has achieved significant progress under the guidance of the "Beijing Declaration" and "Platform for Action", but there is still a long way to go for the full realization of gender equality. The international community should stick to peace and avoid harms of wars on human beings and especially on women. Every country should make unremitting efforts to ensure women's real safety and dignity, free from violence and the rights to education and employment, and strive for an early realization of women's complete and equal participation in social and economic activities.
