On the evening of 30 September, President Jiang Zemin spoke over the phone with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.

President Jiang highly appreciated President Musharraf's resolute position against terrorism and expressed his full understanding of and respect for the position and measures that Pakistan has taken. President Jiang said that China is a trusted friend of Pakistan. We are ready to strengthen our coordination and cooperation with Pakistan.

President Jiang pointed out that terrorism is a common enemy to the world. It is a threat to the peace and development of the human society. The Chinese Government is ready to work with Pakistan and the international community to fight all sorts of terrorism and enhance international cooperation in this field. At the same time, President Jiang stressed that the fight against terrorism should have concrete evidence and specific objectives. It should also abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the recognized norms of the international law. This is a consensus of the international community.

President Musharraf appreciated President Jiang's views. He pointed out that the decision by the Pakistani Government to combat terrorism has won the support of the majority of the Pakistanis. The current situation has brought about economic difficulties to Pakistan. At such a juncture, Pakistan is eager to maintain its exchanges and cooperation with the international community.

President Musharraf stressed that Sino-Pakistani friendship has withstood the test of time. No matter what happens, the bilateral friendship will not be affected.

President Jiang said that this year marks the 50 anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. We should make joint efforts to push forward the friendly relations. China is ready to enhance its mutually beneficial cooperation in all fields with Pakistan. To express its support to the Pakistani Government, The Chinese Government has decided to provide emergency assistance of 10 million RMB yuan to Pakistan.

President Musharraf expressed his gratitude to China's support and assistance to Pakistan.
