Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan
refuted on January 31 the recent remarks by the head of the
American Institute in Taiwan.
Kong was asked by a reporter to comment on
reports that the head of the American Institute in Taiwan
(AIT) had said recently that the U.S. should continue to
sell weapons to Taiwan to help Taiwan defend itself, and
that the Chinese side should not set any pre-condition for
cross-straits dialogue.
Kong said
that the AIT head's remarks are erroneous and not worth
commenting, and that the AIT head had run counter to the
U.S. government's commitment on the One-China principle and
provisions of the three Sino-U.S Joint
Communiqués. The Taiwan issue
is China's internal affair, which allows no intervention by
any foreigner, Kong added.
