On October 25, 2004, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with US Secretary of State Colin Powell at Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai. Wen Jiabao said that in recent years, China and the US have made new headways on cooperation in various fields, which not only benefits the two countries and peoples, but also exerts a positive impact upon safeguarding world peace and stability. Wen Jiabao pointed out that the process of Sino-US ties repeatedly proves that peace brings benefits to both sides, while fight causes destruction. Both sides must recognize that the two countries share broad common interests and needs for cooperation and only by dealing with bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term prospective and addressing issues of common concern properly, can Sino-US ties develop smoothly and interests of the two sides be safeguarded earnestly. Regarding the Taiwan issue, Wen Jiabao emphasized that there is no one that hopes to resolve the Taiwan issue through peaceful means more than us. We will show our greatest sincerity and do our utmost to strive for peaceful reunification and never allow Taiwan to be "cut apart" from our country. On issues involving the state sovereignty and territorial integrity, we will never comprise. We hope the US can fulfill its commitments, comply with the three Sino-US Joint Communiqués and do more things beneficial to the situation across the Taiwan Straits. Wen Jiabao made positive remarks on the good momentum for development of Sino-US economic and trade relations, appreciated the US government for rejecting the request to investigate the Chinese government's manipulation of the RMB exchange rate and other issues in accordance with Article 301. He reaffirmed that China will continue earnestly fulfilling its commitments on its accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and strictly protecting intellectual property rights. He also expressed his hope that the US can relax restrictions on Chinese exports. Powell agreed to Wen Jiabao's comments on bilateral ties. He said that President Bush firmly believes effective cooperation between the US and China in various fields greatly contributes to the development of bilateral relationship. In recent years, this important relationship has enjoyed sound development. The US fully recognizes the significance of the Taiwan issue to China. The one-China policy followed by the US government will not change and the US will continue to adhere to the three Sino-US Joint Communiqués and oppose "Taiwan independence." The two sides also exchanged views on counter-terrorism, the Korean Peninsular nuclear issue, the Iraqi situation and other issues. |
