On December 18, the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Yakovenko gave a special talk on the draft of the Law against the Splitting of the Country to be reviewed by the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress. He said in accordance with the Treaty of Good-Neighborly Friendship and Cooperation between Russia and China signed on July 16, 2001, Russia supports the policies adopted by the government of the People's Republic of China on issues related to the national unity and territorial integrity. Russia believes there is but one China in the world, the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government to represent the whole of China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. Russia is opposed to any form of Taiwan independence and cannot accept "two Chinas" or "one China one Taiwan". Russia consistently supports the efforts China has made for the peaceful resolution of the Taiwan issue. When meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Russia Liu Guchang on the same day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alexiev indicated that Russia fully understands and supports China's efforts in opposing splitting and safeguarding national solidarity, believing it is conducive to the peace and stability of the Taiwan Straits and the Asia Pacific. |
