On May 11, 2005, Chairman Jia Qinglin held talks with Mexican Senate President Fernandez in Mexico City. Both sides exchanged opinions on China-Mexico relations and other issues of common concern.

Jia made high remarks on the development of China-Mexico relations, saying that although China and Mexico are ocean far away, the two peoples enjoy profound traditional friendship and treat each other as close neighbor and that the two countries understand and trust each other despite different national conditions. Over the past 33 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, the bilateral relations have been developing steadily, bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various fields keep expanding and have made fruitful results and both sides have maintained sound communications and cooperation in international affairs. In 2004 Premier Wen Jiabao during his visit to Mexico declared the establishment of China-Mexico strategic partnership jointly with President Fox, which is an important sign that the long-term bilateral friendly relations get increasingly deepened and lays down a sound foundation for both sides to further exchanges and cooperation in all fields. In 2004, China and Mexico established the Sino-Mexican joint standing committee, marking a major step in comprehensively promoting the development of bilateral strategic partnership. At present China-Mexico relations are in the best period of history.

Jia said that in recent years the Chinese leaders have reached many important consensuses on pushing forward the China-Mexico and China-Latin America friendly cooperation with the Mexican leaders and leaders of related Latin American countries. China is willing to work with Mexico and related Latin American countries to actively implement those consensuses, seize opportunities to deepen the mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation with related countries in such fields as economy and trade, tourism and ports and stimulate further development of China-Mexico and China-Latin America relations.

Jia noted that the Taiwan question is a principled question concerning China's core interest. China highly appreciates that Mexico always adheres to the one-China policy and hopes that Mexico continues to support the efforts of the Chinese government and people to realize national reunification.

Jia also introduced the multi-party cooperation and political consultative system under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), pointing out that the CPPCC is willing to establish close contacts and reinforce exchanges at multiple levels with the Mexican parliament and make joint contributions to promote the development of bilateral relations and enhance the friendship of the two peoples.

Fernandez said that in recent years the leaders of China and Mexico have conducted close exchanges, bilateral relations maintained the momentum of sound development and both countries achieved major progresses in economic and trade cooperation. The remarkable achievements of Chinese economy are admirable. Like other Latin American countries, Mexico attaches importance to further developing relations with China and strengthening the friendly cooperation with China in various fields. Mexico and China can complement each other with their respective advantages in the field of economic and trade growth. Both countries can help each other and strengthen cooperation.

Fernandez noted that Mexico will continue to follow the one-China policy and expects to reinforce the high-level exchanges with China, inject new energy into the bilateral strategic partnership and deepen the bilateral cooperation in such fields as economy and trade, tourism, civil aviation and port affairs. The Mexican parliament is willing to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the CPPCC.

Before the talks Jia at the invitation of Fernandez attended the plenary session of the standing committee of the Mexican parliament and listened to related introduction.
