2011-09-27 16:01

On September 26, 2011, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with Arab League (AL) Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle respectively at the UN Headquarters in New York.

In the meeting with al-Arabi, Yang said that as the relationship between China and the Arab League has made rapid progress and has entered a new stage, China hopes to further enrich bilateral strategic cooperation with the group and enhance the building of China-Arab States Cooperation Forum. China attaches great importance to the AL's important role in stabilizing the situation in west Asia and northern Africa, and is willing to work with the AL to promote peace, stability and development in the region, Yang noted. Al-Arabi said that China-AL strategic partnership has been developing well with both sides sharing the same goal and coordinating closely with each other. The Arab League appreciates China's support for the just cause of the Arab people and would like to enhance cooperation with China on regional and international affairs as well as in the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum.

On Palestine's bid for UN membership, Yang noted that China has always believed that establishing an independent state is an inalienable and lawful right for the Palestinian people. China supports Palestine's efforts to establish, on the basis of the 1967 borders, an independent Palestinian state that enjoys full sovereignty with East Jerusalem as its capital, he added. Al- Arabi expressed his appreciation to China's support for Palestine' s just request.

During his meeting with Westerwelle, Yang said that China-Germany relations have enjoyed sound development. In the current international situation, the close communication between China and Germany has vital significance in promoting bilateral ties and strengthening coordination in regional and international affairs. China is willing to maintain high-level exchanges, enhance coordination on major international and regional issues and work together with Germany to push the upcoming G20 summit to yield positive results, he said. Westerwelle expressed agreement with Yang's views. The Chinese and German foreign ministers also exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan, west Asia and northern Africa.
