On November 19, 2012, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi talked with Egypt's Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr over the phone and exchanged ideas on the situation in the Gaza Strip. Mohammed Kamel Amr said that since the 14th this month, Israel has launched large-scale air strikes over the Gaza Strip of Palestine, which left lots of civilians dead and injured, many of whom are women and children. This kind of situation must not continue. Egypt hopes that the international community including China will take powerful actions as soon as possible to stop the aggressive operations of Israel and prevent the current tense situation from deteriorating. Yang Jiechi remarked that the Chinese side is greatly concerned over the continuous large-scale air strikes by Israel on the Gaza Strip. It is unacceptable that a lot of innocent civilians were dead as the result of reckless use of force under any pretext. The Chinese side has clearly stated its strong stance on the matter. China urges that all sides involved should respond to the calls of the international community and immediately stop their military operations. The renewed conflicts in the Gaza Strip show that under the new regional circumstances, settling the Palestine issue becomes particularly important and urgent. The international community should not ignore the matter but take real actions to push Palestine and Israel to restart peace talks as soon as possible. Yang admired the active diplomatic mediation made by Egypt and other Arab countries to safeguard the interests of the Palestinian people. Yang expressed China's willingness to maintain communication and coordination with the parties involved in the international community including Egypt and to make efforts to end the current Gaza conflict and push for a just and rational settlement of the Palestine issue. Mohammed Kamel Amr thanked China for its consistent support for the just cause of the Palestinian people and highly appreciated China's just stance on the Gaza conflict. Amr expressed his willingness to stay connected with China on the matter of easing the tense situation in the Gaza Strip. |
