ROK President Roh Moo-hyun Meets with CCPCC Chairman Jia Qinglin

On August 27, 2004, President of Republic of Korea (ROK) Roh Moo-hyun met with visiting Chairman of Chinese People's Political and Consultative Conference (CCPCC).

Jia Qinglin first conveyed a message from Chinese President Hu Jintao to President Roh Moo-hyun. Hu Jintao noted in the message that the Chinese government pursues friendly policies toward the ROK and would like to become good neighbors and partners with mutual understanding, mutual trust and mutual support with the ROK so as to make unremitting efforts for the common prosperity of the two countries as well as the peace and development of the region and the world at large.

Jia Qinglin said his visit coincides with the 12th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the ROK. Bilateral relations have been developing rapidly with notable achievements over the past 12 years. In particular, since the two sides declared to establish China-ROK comprehensive cooperative partnership last July, exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in various areas have witnessed new developments.

Jia Qinglin indicated the Chinese government gives high priority to the development of China-ROK relations and would like carry on the friendly cooperation to future generations together with the ROK. He said the Chinese side will continue to enrich the implications of China-ROK comprehensive cooperative partnership in light of the guideline of "becoming good neighbors and partners" so as to benefit both countries and both peoples. The Chinese side would like to further consolidate the political basis for bilateral relations with the ROK side on the basis of mutual respect, mutual understanding and mutual trust. China wishes to enhance economic and trade exchanges and cooperation with the ROK in a bid to create a win-win situation and achieve mutual benefits and common development. The Chinese side is firmly committed to maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and would like to make unremitting efforts to that end. China and the ROK have conducted close cooperation in the six-party talks which are aimed at resolving the nuclear issue on the peninsula. China would like to work with the ROK and other relevant parties to promote greater progress from the peace talks.

Roh Moo-hyun welcomed Jia Qinglin to pay a formal visit to the ROK. He said the ROK-China comprehensive cooperative partnership co-defined by President Hu Jintao and him is of particular importance to the development of bilateral relations. The two sides have been implementing related consensuses and agreements over the past year and the overall development of bilateral relations remains sound. The ROK government attaches great importance to the friendly cooperative relations with China and highly appraises the important role China has played in regional and international issues like the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. The ROK will continue to uphold the "one China" policy and make its utmost efforts in promoting in-depth development of bilateral relations.

Both sides agreed to respect each other, treat each other in a candid manner and appropriately address each other's concerns from the overall situation of bilateral relations and a long-term strategic perspective so as to ensure sound and stable development of the relations between the two countries.

Later that noon, Roh Moo-hyun held a banquet for Jia Qinglin.
