Vice Chairman Simayi Aimaiti Attends the Opening Ceremony of the Third ASEM Interfaith Dialogue

On June 20, 2007, Simayi Aimaiti, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), attended and addressed the opening ceremony of the Third ASEM Interfaith Dialogue, which was held in Nanjing, China.

Simayi pointed out that under the circumstance of growing globalisation, strengthening dialogues between different civilizations is of practical significance to promoting the harmonized co-existence of different faiths and safeguarding the peace of the world. ASEM should conduct sincere and pragmatic dialogues on the basis of equality and mutual benefits and make positive contributions to a more peaceful, stable, prosperous and harmonious world.

Simayi noted that China is a country with diversified religious beliefs and people of different religious beliefs stay in harmony and have an outstanding tradition of practicing samaritanism, helping the poor, and caring for others. They are also active members in building the harmonious society and world.

On the same day, Simayi also met with distinguished guests including Gianni Vernetti, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs of Italy, co-chair country of the dialogue, M. Maftuh Basyuni, Indonesian Minister for Religious Affairs, Salim Saifullah Khan, Pakistani Federal Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination, Ong Keng Yong, ASEAN Secretary-General, and Yusuf, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei.
