On December 8, 2007, Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi at his official residence.

The comprehensive strategic relationship between China and Malaysia has made important progress in recent years, Yang said. The two countries have seen frequent exchanges at various levels and the economic and trade cooperation has achieved remarkable results, Yang said. Yang also noted that Sino-Malaysian cooperation has a broad prospect, adding that China is willing to work together with Malaysia to maintain the high-level exchanges and step up efforts to formulate action plans of strategic cooperation. China is ready to conduct pragmatic cooperation with Malaysia in investment, infrastructure construction and other areas and expand cooperation in such fields as science and technology, education and cultural exchanges, while maintaining good coordination and collaboration in regional and international affairs to further promote ties between the two countries, he said.

Badawi said that relations between Malaysia and China are developing fast and the fruits of cooperation between the two countries in various fields are remarkable. Malaysia valued the strategic ties with China and adhered firmly to the one-China policy, Badawi said, adding that his country supports China's position on the Taiwan question. The Malaysian prime minister said that Malaysia welcomes Chinese enterprises to invest there. He hoped that the two countries will further boost exchanges of culture, youth and political parties as well as their cooperation on international and regional issues.

Badawi also noted that China is a friend and partner of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). He said Malaysia welcomes China to participate in the ASEAN integration process to strengthen cooperation between ASEAN and China. Yang said that China will continue to make efforts to deepen China's ties with ASEAN.

Later, Yang Jiechi held talks with his Malaysian counterpart Syed Hamid Albar. The two foreign ministers discussed bilateral ties as well as international and regional issues of common concern and reached consensus on enhancing bilateral cooperation in the following three aspects. First, both sides should step up working on action plans for their strategic cooperation to strive for their early signing. Second, the two countries should explore new fields to deepen economic and trade cooperation, strengthen cooperation in bilateral investment, infrastructure construction and energy, and boost the South-South cooperation. Third, both sides should promote exchanges in such fields as culture, sports and tourism as well as between local governments, youth, non-governmental organizations, news media and political parties so as to consolidate the social basis of China-Malaysia friendship.
