Hu Jintao Meets with President of Namibia

On the afternoon of July 20, 2004, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with President of the Republic of Namibia Sam Nujom, who is on a working visit to China, at the Great Hall of the People. The two sides held cordial and friendly conversations.

Hu Jintao said that people of China and Namibia have enjoyed deep traditional friendship. As early as before the independence of Namibia, the government and people of China had rendered firm support to the people of Namibia for their struggle for national independence. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 14 years ago, relations between the two countries have been developing smoothly. Top leaders of the two countries have maintained frequent exchanges, exchanges and cooperation in economy, culture, education and some other fields have yielded positive achievements and the two sides have offered mutual understanding and support for each other in international affairs. Namibia has given firm support for the positions of China on important issues, such as those related to Taiwan and human rights, for which China is thankful.

Hu Jintao added that China cherishes very much its traditional friendship with Namibia and stands ready to work together with Namibia to strengthen the friendly exchanges between the leaders, governments, parliaments and political parties of the two countries so as to enhance mutual political trust, to expand bilateral economic and trade cooperation by encouraging and supporting strong Chinese enterprises to invest and set up factories in Namibia, to enhance exchanges and cooperation in culture, education and some other fields and expand areas of cooperation in an effort to benefit both peoples and jointly promote the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries towards one after another new high in the new century.

Nujom made high appraisals of Namibia-China relations. He said that in the process of fighting for national independence and striving for national development, the Namibian people have received precious support from the Chinese government and people, both materially and spiritually, which they will never forget. He indicated Namibia hopes that the two sides will make joint efforts to transform the good political relations between the two countries into mutually beneficial cooperation in all fields. Namibia will continue to improve its domestic investment environment and look forward to having more Chinese entrepreneurs to invest in Namibia and strengthen cooperation with Namibia in industries with high added value and tourism. Nujom reiterated that Namibia will continue to firmly adhere to the one-China policy. He highly appreciates the active and constructive role of China in major international as well as regional issues, such as the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, saying that Namibia hopes to enhance cooperation with China in international institutions, such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, to jointly promote South-South as well as South-North cooperation in a bid to boost world peace and development.

Following the talks, the two sides signed the agreement on the establishment of the joint committee on economy and trade between the two governments, the agreement on economic and technological cooperation between the two governments and the implementation plan (2005-2008) for their agreement on cultural cooperation. The two heads of state attended the signing ceremony.
