On the evening of July 30, Chinese President Hu Jintao held a telephone conversation with U.S. President Bush upon request.

Bush made positive appraisals of the recent development of U.S.-China relations, saying that a strong and prosperous China conforms to the interests of both the U.S. and China, and the U.S. is willing to maintain good relations with China. He indicated he understands the concerns of China over the Taiwan question and reiterated that the U.S. would follow the one-China policy, abide by the three joint communiqués and not support "Taiwan independence", stressing that this stance of the U.S. will not change.

Hu Jintao indicated that with the joint efforts of China and the U.S., relations between the two countries have maintained a tendency of active development in general, saying that China would like to continue keeping the close communication and consultation with the U.S., strengthen exchanges and cooperation, and respect and properly address each other's concerns so as to push the constructive cooperative relations between China and the U.S. towards constant development.

Speaking of the Taiwan issue, Hu Jintao stressed that China will strive to resolve the issue peacefully with utmost sincerity and greatest efforts, but will never allow "Taiwan independence" or allow anyone to split Taiwan away from other parts of China. Hu Jintao reiterated the opposition to sales of advanced weapons by the U.S. to Taiwan, emphasizing that the situation across the Taiwan Straits is currently very sensitive and complicated, and both China and the U.S. should oppose "Taiwan independence" and resolutely stop the separatist forces seeking "Taiwan independence" from any risky action.

The two heads of state indicated that they would make joint efforts to further expand the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and the U.S..

The two sides also exchanged views on international issues of common interest.
