Premier Wen Jiabao Meets with Namibian President
2004-07-21 00:00

On July 21, 2004, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with President of the Republic of Namibia Sam Nujoma at Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

Wen Jiabao made high appraisals of China-Namibia relations, reaffirming that China attaches great importance to developing relations with Namibia and is willing to make joint efforts with Namibia to constantly consolidate and develop the traditional friendship between the two countries.

Speaking of the economic and trade relations between the two countries, Wen Jiabao noted that China and Namibia have conducted very good economic cooperation over the years, which is based on reciprocity and mutual benefit and has brought benefits to the two peoples. China would like to continue encouraging Chinese enterprises to invest in Namibia and strengthen cooperation with their Namibian counterparts in the fields of mining, agriculture fishery and some other fields. China hopes that Namibia will create favorable conditions for the development of these Chinese enterprises in Namibia.

Touching upon China-Africa relations, Wen Jiabao stressed that the western colonial rule is an important root cause for poverty and backwardness of Africa, which have not been eradicated even today. The political turmoil of some African countries in the aftermath of the Cold War made the conditions for African development even worse. It therefore follows that only by joining forces with each other can African countries realize their development independently. China supports the African Union to play an even greater role in realizing peace and stability in Africa and promoting the African integration process, and stands ready to enhance cooperation with the implementation committee of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and engage in mutually beneficial cooperation with Africa through the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

Nujoma said that the Namibian government places a high priority on relations with China, stating that the very purpose of his visit to China this time is to cement friendship and expand cooperation with China and at the same time learn from China's experience in economic development. He said that the Namibian government and people are deeply grateful to China for its precious assistance over the years and stand ready to further expand the friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation with China in all fields.

Nujoma made high comments on the constructive role of China in today's international affairs. He said that South-South cooperation is becoming more important against the present situations, adding that he believes China will, as always, continue supporting efforts made by the African Union to promote peace and development in Africa.
