Chinese President Hu Jintao Talks over Phone with US President George W. Bush
2004-10-07 00:00

On the night of October 7, 2004, Chinese President Hu Jintao had a phone conversation with US President George W. Bush at the request of the latter.

Bush said during the conversation that the US side attaches great importance to US-China relations, reiterating that the US government would abide by one-China policy, observe the three Sino-US Joint Communiqués, and oppose any unilateral change to the status quo of Taiwan. Bush stressed the US stance on this issue will never change. He also spoke highly of the current development of the economic and trade ties between the United States and China and hoped that the cooperation between the two sides will witness constant progress.

Hu said he appreciated Bush's reiteration on his commitment to developing long-term and steady bilateral relations with China. Hu noted that maintaining and developing sound China-US ties is in line with the fundamental interests of the two countries and the two peoples. It is also conducive to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large. China is willing to enhance dialogue and cooperation with the United States and appropriately address their mutual concerns to further promote the bilateral constructive partnership.

He emphasized that the Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan issue is very clear. China will exert the utmost efforts with the utmost sincerity to resolve the Taiwan issue by peaceful means, but will never tolerate "Taiwan independence". We would not allow anyone to separate Taiwan from China by any means. Currently the separatist activities of the "Taiwan independence" forces constitute the biggest threat to peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits. We hope that the United States would observe its commitment to upholding the one-China policy, following the three Sino-US Joint Communiqués, opposing Taiwan independence by not selling advanced weapons to Taiwan and not sending wrong signals to the Taiwan authorities.

Hu noted that China and the United States have maintained good momentum in economic and trade cooperation. It is hoped that the US side would take more active actions in relaxing restrictions on export to China and recognizing the full market economy status of China. He noted that the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries will surely be able to witness better development with the joint efforts of both sides.

The two heads of state also exchanged views on other important issues of common concern.
