On December 24, 2012, the Foreign Ministry held a summing-up meeting on 20 years of its poverty alleviation work in Yunnan Province. Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Director General of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development Fan Xiaojian, Vice Foreign Minister Song Tao and Vice Governor of Yunnan Province Gao Shuxun, as well as representatives from the Foreign Ministry, relevant departments of the Yunnan provincial government and a number of enterprises, attended the meeting. Vice Foreign Minister and head of the Foreign Ministry poverty alleviation leading group Song Tao delivered a work report at the meeting, summarizing the achievements the Foreign Ministry has scored in alleviating poverty in Yunnan Province over the past 20 years. The report also presented plans and tasks for the future, saying that the Foreign Ministry would comply with the strategic goals endorsed at the 18th CPC National Congress and help to turn poverty-stricken counties in Yunnan Province into well-off counties as scheduled.

Speaking approvingly of the accomplishments the Foreign Ministry has achieved in poverty alleviation in the past 20 years, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi called on all attendants to continue to participate in poverty alleviation and make greater contribution to economical and social growth in Yunnan. Director Fan Xiaojian extolled what the Foreign Ministry has done to alleviate poverty, and Vice Governor Gao Shuxun, on behalf of Yunnan Province, extended his gratitude to the Foreign Ministry for its support over the past 20 years. Also as part of the meeting, awards were given to outstanding units and individuals from the Foreign Ministry in recognition of their contribution to poverty alleviation over the past 20 years.

During the past 20 years, the Foreign Ministry has granted an aggregate poverty alleviation fund of 286 million yuan to Jinping County and Malipo County in Yunnan Province and launched more than 1,200 poverty alleviation projects there.
